almond harvest data

Click on the buttons below to see the summarized data from the 800,000+ individual almonds we have hand cracked and inspected.

Navel orangeworm (NOW) is the primary pest of almonds as they cause direct damage to the crop during hull split.  The worms survive the winter and the first half of the summer in the almond mummies left in the tree from the previous year's crop.  Estimating the population size of the overwintering generation is the cornerstone of our NOW management.  With our data we have been able to correlate population size directly to damage levels the following year giving us a powerful tool for tailoring management tactics and aggressiveness on a block by block basis.

UC guidelines recommend collecting and cracking a sample from your own orchards in order to assess the source of damage in your grade each season.  We have done this for each of our clients since the inception of our service and now have a powerful dataset from a  decade's worth of nuts from across the state.  With this we can identify seasonal, varietal and regional trends from as broad as the whole state to as narrow as each individual block.
